How to Draw A Cartoon Lion

Step 1

You can tell whether a lion is a boy or a girl by whether it has a mane. With this mane, we will start in the first part of your cartoon lion drawing.

If you'd like, you can also adapt this design to a lioness by removing the central motif!

The central part is drawn with many curved and wavy lines to make it nice and long. There will also be some thick curls hanging down from the forehead.

We'll draw two round ears sticking out of the mane to finish this step.

Step 2

The outline of the mane is ready, and in this step of our tutorial on how to draw a cartoon lion, we will draw some details of the face.

First, draw some curved lines to create the outline of the face. This will be thicker on the sides and have a thinner, more curved chin underneath.

Then we draw the eyes. These consist of some oval shapes with curved lines at the base. Inside there are then smaller ovals for the pupils.

The nose will be thin and angular; underneath, we'll use rounded lines for the smiling, open mouth. Make sure to put on some sharp teeth before proceeding!

Step 3

Starting from the head and face, we draw the front paws of the lion.

These legs may not have the same level of detail as the head, but getting the proportions and position suitable can still be a challenge.

The one on the left is raised and has a curved paw. The other is straight and has rounded toes at the end. Finally, draw a simple curved line for the chest, then move on to step 4!

Step 4

We will now draw the rest of the body outline of this cartoon lion design. The body gets thinner as we move backward, and the legs get thicker at the back than the front.

However, they will also end up with some rounded toes.

You'll notice that this lion is missing the tail but don't worry, and we'll add it along with all the final details in the next step of the guide!

Step 5

When we get to the last stage of this How to Draw a cartoon lion guide, we will color this artwork, but first, we need to add some final touches.

Firstly, no lion would be complete without its tail, so why not add one now? The tail is drawn with curved lines ending in a rounded tuft of hair.

Once the tail is added, let's draw some additional details. Some of it will get onto her face, especially around her eyes.

These help with her facial expression. The result is some wrinkles on the stomach and toes.

Once these are all drawn, you can create a fantastic background backdrop to showcase them! If you're extra creative, you can even add more cartoon animals.

Step 6

It's time to add some color to this awesome lion! Although this is a cartoon representation, we chose realistic colors for our example image.

This meant that we used light shades of brown and beige for most of his coat and then contrasted it with darker shades of brown for the main body and tail tip.

For some pops of color, we added lovely shades of blue for her eyes and bright shades of pink for her inner ears.

Will you go for colors similar to ours, or do you have something else in mind?

There are so many great color options, and each would be great.

You can also have fun with the artistic tools and media you use, so you can have great moments while completing your artwork!
