Story of Krishna Janmashtami | Legend of Krishna Janmashtami

According to Hindu scriptures, Shri Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudev in Mathura on Ashtami Tithi, or the eighth day of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada. Mother Devaki’s brother’s name was Kansa. Kansa used to be the demon king of Mathura at that time. Then a prophecy said that whenever Devaki’s eighth child was born, he would punish Kansa for his sins. This was the reason why Kansa put his own sister and her husband in jail.

He killed Devaki’s children soon after birth to prevent the prophecy from being fulfilled. When Devaki gave birth to her eighth child, the entire palace was magically put into a deep sleep. At night Vasudev saved the child (Shree Krishna’s birth story) from the wrath of Kansa by taking him to Yashoda and Nanda’s house in Vrindavan. This child was the form of Lord Vishnu, who was later named Shri Krishna. Shri Krishna killed his maternal uncle Kansa at a very young age and freed the people of Mathura from the sins of Kansa.

After this Shri Krishna became the charioteer of Pandu’s son Arjuna in the war of Mahabharata fought in Kurukshetra and re-established Dharma on earth.
