Australia international defender Steph Catley has signed a new contract with Arsenal.

Australia international defender Steph Catley has agreed a new contract with Arsenal Women's Super League club, according to an announcement from them. Catley joined them from NWSL side OL Reign in 2020 and has made 74 appearances under Jonas Eidevall since. Catley was often used as cover when Leah Williamson or Rachel Rafaelle were unavailable and she even filled in as centre-back during some competitions this season.

Clare Wheatley, Arsenal's head of women's football, has heaped praise upon Catley. Wheatley called Catley one of the world's premier defenders in her position and noted her 100+ caps for Australia at international tournaments such as this summer's World Cup held here at home. Catley commented on her new deal at Arsenal by describing it as amazing and that Arsenal feels like home; her contract runs until 2023.

Catley has made 74 appearances for the Gunners since joining in 2020.

Catley has been recognized for her impressive performances at Arsenal by signing a new contract. The Australian international defender first made her debut for them against Paris Saint-Germain in the 2020-21 UEFA Women's Champions League quarter-final and since has become an essential member of Jonas Eidevall's side.

Last season, 28-year-old Ashley Colvin excelled on the left for Arsenal alongside Caitlin Foord and Katie McCabe, scoring two goals and providing six assists across 28 appearances - helping her team finish sixth place overall! On occasion she filled in as centre back when needed - contributing significantly to their sixth-place finish.

Catley will remain at Emirates Stadium until 2024 after signing her extension, following midfielder Frida Maanum's commitment. This news provides Catley with an enormous boost as she looks ahead to representing Australia at this summer's World Cup on home soil; Catley's decision has been welcomed by her coaches.

Catley has been a key part of the Gunners’ back four under Jonas Eidevall.

Due to injuries sustained by Leah Williamson, Vivianne Miedema, Kim Little and Caitlin Foord this season, Catley has become a pivotal member of Arsenal's defence under new boss Jonas Eidevall. She has excelled both as left back and centre defender this year - playing both positions well under Jonas Eidevall.

Here is how she helped them to keep the ball out of danger against Chelsea when Arsenal faced defeat with just over 30 minutes remaining in the match.

Due to Lia Walti and Kim Little being absent, Arsenal was forced to play more from the back. Their clever plan included dropping the ball from Maanum or Pelova towards the edge of the box which lured Chelsea press towards it before Zinsberger swept it to McCabe or Foord before Perisset hoisted up their pass in pursuit of Perisset who tried stealing it back from them quickly - an ambitious strategy but one which ultimately failed in execution in final seconds.

Catley has been hailed as one of the best defenders in the world.

Australian defender, also playing for Portland Thorns and Orlando Pride in the NWSL, is widely recognized as a top performer in her position and considered an important role model for younger female defenders.

Catley was part of an effective Arsenal defence that defeated Koge 5-1 in front of an overwhelming away contingent from both Denmark and Sweden in the Champions League, in front of an enormous away contingent from both countries. Starting on the left of defence but also filling in at centre-back when Leah Williamson and Laura Tong's injuries limited Jonas Eidevall's options as manager of Gunners FC.

Eidevall noted his side's closeness as being what motivated them to overcome an off-putting start and kill any tentative advances by HB Koge. Nikita Parris missed her penalty before Anna Patten scored one and Jordan Nobbs headed home the winner - leaving Gunners second in Group C with two games left, although Eidevall concedes Lyon may still top it with victory against them on Thursday in reverse fixture.
