If you're looking for an off-the-beaten-path destination in India, then Gandikota should definitely be on your list. Located in the Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh, Gandikota is known for its breathtaking gorge and ancient fort that dates back to the 13th century.

Often referred to as the Grand Canyon of India, Gandikota offers a unique blend of history, architecture, and natural beauty. The fort was built by the Kakatiya dynasty and later occupied by various rulers, including the Vijayanagara empire and the Qutb Shahi dynasty. Today, it stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the region.

As you enter the fort, you'll be greeted by the majestic view of the Pennar river flowing through the gorge. The red sandstone cliffs and the deep canyon make for a stunning backdrop. You can spend hours exploring the fort's various structures, including the Granary, the Mosque, and the Ranganatha Swamy Temple. The temple is particularly noteworthy for its intricate carvings and sculptures.

Apart from the fort, Gandikota also offers some excellent trekking opportunities. You can trek down to the river and enjoy a peaceful picnic or even go on a boat ride. There are also some lesser-known spots, like the Belum Caves and the Mylavaram Dam, that are worth a visit.

Gandikota is best visited between October and February when the weather is pleasant. It's also recommended to hire a guide who can show you around the fort and give you some insights into its history.
