If you own or manage a property, you know how busy (and sometimes confusing) it can be to take care of a lawn. In terms of caring for a lawn properly and effectively, there is a lot of information available.

Many of our clients tell us that it’s difficult to know when the right time of day or year is for doing specific lawn care tasks or projects. Therefore, here are some tips on when to water, mow, fertilize, apply weed control and fungicide, as well as when to aerate your lawn.
When it comes to watering the lawn, the best time is early in the morning before the sun is at its peak so that the grass can soak up the water before it evaporates. Avoid watering your lawn completely when it is dormant, or semi-dormant, as it may be during the winter. You can once again begin watering the lawn regularly once the growing season begins. In Adelaide lawn care, the growing season typically begins during March.

During the growing season of the year, typically from mid-spring to late fall, mowing the lawn is a regular activity. Generally, mowing should be done in the early evening, since the cooler temperatures allow grass blades to recover overnight; however, sometimes a person just needs to mow when they have the opportunity and time.  When the grass is wet, be sure not to mow it.  In addition to clogging up your lawnmower, wet grass clippings can fall in clumps and smother your grass and create brown spots.

Fertilize the lawn every 3-4 years. Warm-season grass thrives on three to four applications of fertilizer. Fertilizing is recommended in early spring, early summer, early fall, and sometimes even late fall. You should use the right type and amount of fertilizer for your grass, as well as how frequently you should apply it. Fertilizer is usually applied to lawns in which the soil temperature is above 60 degrees. Fertilizing is best done late in the afternoon, when the sun has set and the temperature is starting to drop.

Fungicide can be applied simultaneously with fertilizer, so the application schedule for both products can remain the same. In order to prevent grass diseases like brown patch, fungicides are used.

It is often practiced in late spring to early summer to aerate your lawn for warm-season grasses. You can increase the health of your lawn and the growth of your grass by aerating it. Aeration allows your lawn to receive water, nutrients, and air deeply into the soil.
