Why Therapy for Depression Isn't a Quick Fix: Insights from a Psychiatrist

Many depressed people believe that going to a therapist will make all the problems disappear overnight, but a psychiatrist like me has to tell them otherwise. There is a process involved that takes a certain amount of time, effort, and, above all, patience in therapy, though approaches, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, have indeed been reported to work wonderfully.

In therapy, he learns how to understand those negative thoughts and reframe them and set realistic expectations for life and develop healthy strategies to cope with the ups and downs of life. Small shifts like these often add up over time to form an excellent groundwork for long-lasting mental health improvement. Each single session in therapy contributes positively to some small but tangible changes which eventually lead towards a long-term reduction of symptoms.

It is normal too that people experience ups and downs in their progress; recovery is not linear at all. The effort involved in therapy is in producing resilience and self-awareness, both useful in the long term of managing depression. In itself, this attitude may promote realistic expectations and help achieve a more positive attitude about going to therapy. It certainly is an investment in one's self, and even as the results are not right away, they do so lastingly and radically.
