Two incredible views of two galaxies from two telescopes!
Hubble previously studied Arp 142, also known as the Penguin and the Egg. For the second science anniversary of NASA's James Webb Space Telescope, infrared observations shine new light on this interacting galaxy pair.
On the left, Hubble's visible-light view shows a dark brown lane of dust that stretches from the Penguin's "beak" down through its "back". Hubble's studies helped astronomers learn more about the galaxy pair's close encounter and how their gravitational attraction triggers new starbirth.
Webb's new observations in near-infrared light pick up more background galaxies, and show how the Penguin and Egg are joined by a haze which contains a mix of stars and gas, a result of their gravitational interactions.
With their complementary abilities to detect different wavelengths of light, Webb and Hubble are poised to continue gathering extraordinary observations from our universe for years to come.
Happy second anniversary, Webb!
