President Trump Declares English as Official Language of the United States, Revoking Clinton-Era Language Access Order

On March 1, 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order making English the official language of the United States. This order rescinded a 2000 mandate by former President Bill Clinton that required federal agencies and recipients of federal funding to provide language assistance to non-English speakers. The new directive allows federal agencies to decide whether to continue offering services in languages other than English, aiming to promote unity and streamline government operations. Critics express concern that this change may limit access to essential services for non-English-speaking communities.

Nevada Agencies Face Urgency to Utilize $25M for Language Access Services

"Despite 30% of Nevadans speaking a language other than English at home, only about USD 5m of a language access plan fund worth a total of USD 25m had been appropriated as of January 2025, according to an AP article published on several news media.

Legislation passed in Nevada in 2021, specifically SB 318 for agencies and AB 266 for cities and counties, requires government offices to create and implement language access plans to serve limited English proficiency (LEP) residents.

AB 266 requires the board of county commissioners in counties with a population of 100,000 or more (and cities with 25,000 people or more in those counties) to publish certain notices in other languages. In general, services vary by agency and location, but should include translation as well as spoken language and sign language interpreting."
