You are still permitted to remain in Canada after your permanent resident (PR) card expires since your status as a permanent resident is unaffected. However, depending on where you live, some provincial services can need you to show a valid PR card.
You must renew your card before departing Canada if it has expired and you intend to travel outside of the country. To return to Canada by commercial means—such as buses, trains, airplanes, or boats—you must have a valid PR card.
