Roger Leaks Jr. grew up in an all-Black sharecropping community in rural South Carolina, taking adult responsibilities before age ten. Despite hardships, he and his family thrived. On September 30, 1939, he married Phebbie Johnson, forming a strong, cooperative, and loving partnership.
