The National Professional Practice Examination, whose short form is NPPE, confirms knowledge of ethics, law and professionalism.

Currently, 14 engineering and geoscience self-regulatory organizations in Canada utilize the NPPE as one of the licensure eligibility criteria. This examination adheres to all related standards detailed in the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing to make sure that the exam is reliable, fair and valid (psychometrically defensible).

This computer-based exam is administered by means of Meazure Learning, a merged partnership between Yardstick, a Canadian computer-based testing vendor, and ProctorU, which is an online remote proctoring service.

Before you apply:

You need to be a member-in-training or Engineering/Geoscience Licensee applicant.

An Engineering/Geoscience Licensee applicant needs to have received a letter, which grants permission to write the exam.

Every member must be compliant with continuing professional development (CPD) reporting for the previous year.

How to register:

  • Registration deadline: December 2, 2022

Attempts:

There is a limit of four attempts to write the APEGS NPPE exam. When failed the fourth attempt, you will have to wait for one year before being allowed to register for a fifth attempt. If, on the fifth attempt, you are not successful, your file will be closed, and you will be required to apply again.

Additional professional development:

Because this exam is only one step to becoming a professional, members-in-training and licensee applicants are strongly motivated to view the below-listed three online professional development modules by the time they become registered as professionals/licensees:

  1. Professionalism and Ethics
  2. The Law and Professional Practice in Engineering and Geoscience
  3. Investigation and Discipline

These modules don’t prepare you to take the Professional Practice Exam, they will provide you with the necessary knowledge that you need to prepare for professional practice.
