Effects of ether anesthesia

Long successfully performed the historic surgery, but he didn't immediately make his findings public. He worried that his methods would be questioned and ridiculed by his peers, or published preemptively. He just went on to perform more surgeries with ether over the next few years, recording each one.

It was not until October 16, 1846, that Boston surgeon William Morton caused a sensation when he demonstrated in public the procedure of performing dental surgery with ether. Morton claimed to be the inventor of ether anesthesia and gave it a patented name: Letheon (God of forgetting). This has led to complaints and controversy from other doctors, including Long.

Long contributed an article to the Southern Medical and Surgical Journal on April 12, 1849, detailing his first operation on ether anesthesia, performed on March 30, 1842, along with testimonies from Venners and four other witnesses. This article is considered to be the earliest and most reliable evidence of ether anesthesia, and has led to Lang being recognized as the true discoverer of ether anesthesia.

Lang's assessment

Lang was a great doctor and scientist who, with his wisdom and courage, brought a new method of anesthesia to mankind and left an indelible mark on the history of medicine. A man of humility and integrity, he did not rush to publish his findings for fame and fortune, nor did he get into trouble with others for glory. He just quietly went about his job, providing the best for his patients. He is a man worthy of respect and admiration.

Long died on June 16, 1878, at the age of 63. He is buried in a church in Jefferson with the words: "My father was the first to use ether as a surgical anesthetic." This is the simplest and most sincere compliment to him.
