Lovebirds are very sociable and loving birds who famously enjoy being surrounded by members of their own species and finding a partner to spend their life with, as they are one of the most faithful animals to their mates.

Lovebirds also have several skills owing to the versatility in their legs, which makes them able to manipulate objects. For this reason, many people take young lovebirds into their home in order to train them.

          image

          Patience in training lovebirds

No matter their species, birds are complicated creatures to train - more so than a dog or a cat. This is why you need to be clear that, whilst it is possible to train a lovebird, you'll need to have lots of patience and always use positive reinforcement.

If you have a hand-raised lovebird (i.e., that still feeds on baby bird formula) the task will be easier, since it's very likely that the bird will be used to you and won't have any qualms in interacting with you.

Get your pet lovebird to trust you

Before starting to train a pet lovebird, you must make sure it feels comfortable with you. Otherwise, you won't get any results. Get your lovebird to trust you by speaking softly, playing soft music and giving it fruit; your goal is to create an environment in which the two of you can connect.

Your pet lovebird must be used to seeing you and hearing your voice; it's essential that you start training it without it feeling scared of you. It is very dangerous to shout during this process, since birds are very sensitive animals which easily change upon hearing sudden noises. Whistle softly to it to get your lovebird's attention. It will probably reply to you.

Be persistent in training your lovebird

It's highly likely that the lovebird won't want to interact with you in the first few times. On the other hand, if you pay attention to it every day and make an effort to socialize it, your pet lovebird will gradually be more confident and relaxed in your presence.

          Training and Handling Fischer Chicks
          Fischer Chicks Handling and Training

Use your imagination to stimulate your lovebird with toys, music and even images that it likes. Remember that they are intelligent birds notable for their curiosity and affection.

Tips to start training a lovebird

If your pet lovebird already knows you and is calm in your presence, you can start the training.

Firstly, for roughly one week, start by putting your hand in the cage. Do so in a relaxed manner and don't touch the bird; simply leave it where it is and try to offer it some kind of fruit or treat that it likes. Don't worry if the lovebird doesn't accept the treat at first, as this is normal. Keep trying to interact with it but never pressure it.

Try to be friendly with your pet , by keeping some bird food in your hand and place it in the cage,  first time it wont bite the food and wait until it picks the food from your hand. Secondly keep your empty hand in the cage until your pet sits on your hand.

Only in these cases can you start the training. The lovebird must show that it trusts you, so this is a very important step. Few people have the patience and sensitivity to train a bird - if you got to this step, you have what it takes. Now comes the actual training:

          1. Get hold of some treats or food that it likes.
          2. Choose an enclosed space, such as the living room. Draw the curtains so that the lovebird doesn't fly into the windows and remove any sharp or potentially dangerous objects from the area that could hurt it.
          3. Leave the lovebird's cage in the same room, supplied with food and water. Get ready to be in the room for a long period of time, if necessary.
          4. Put your hand inside the cage and, when the lovebird jumps up onto your finger, let it out. Don't worry if it flies; as long as the windows are covered there is no reason why it would hurt itself.
          5. Give it time to enjoy flying freely. Your pet lovebird will appreciate these moments in which it can develop its muscles and investigate on its own behalf. It goes without saying that you need to be present and keep an eye on its behavior. Lovebirds have a tendency to be somewhat destructive when they go crazy over certain objects, so make sure that no damage is done.
          6. Don't pick the lovebird up! Try to get it to come back to you using gentle words, treats or whatever technique that you employ in your relationship. Don't worry if it doesn't do so, and be prepared to be in the room for a while. It will return to its cage once it is hungry or thirsty.

Keeping a pet lovebird happy and healthy

Remember that a pet lovebird isn't a toy, so you need to treat it carefully and be patient with its training. Don't force it or be persistent, as you are directly responsible for its well-being. Little by little, on a basis of confidence and trust, your lovebird will learn to perform various tricks or behave as you want it to outside of the cage.

Other tips to train a pet lovebird:

          • Don't give it too many treats, as it can get fat it if eats too much. Instead you should use kisses, strokes and praise as a reward.
          • Don't make the training sessions too long. 20 minutes is a good amount of time so that your pet lovebird doesn't get exhausted. Practice on a daily basis so that it feels happy in your presence.
          • If the bird pecks you during the first few steps, don't take your hand away. If you do so, it will understand that it has a powerful weapon in its beak. Next time, use flesh-colored gloves.
          • If it pecks you during the basic training phase, use the word "no" and return it to the cage.
          • Lovebirds are sensitive animals which can detect your nervousness. As such, you should always be relaxed when you interact with it.
          • Don't shout at your lovebird or harm it, as this will only cause distrust and fear in the animal. It's important for your lovebird to remain in its cage.
          • Don't let it spend all day out of it, since with one lapse of concentration it will be able to escape, and it won't know how to return.
          • They like to talk. You can teach them to talk by always repeating the same phrases to it.

            Clown Loach in Planted Aquarium

The Clown Loach  is one of the most beautifully colored and patterned of all the freshwater fish. Its scientific name is Chromobotia macracanthus. Clown Loach is loved for its bright colors and is one of the more outgoing loach personalities. This very popular fish is also known as the Tiger Loach.

            image

This handsome "tiger loach" has a bright orangish to reddish body and three broad jet black vertical bars. One bar passes through the eye, the next is located just in front of the dorsal fin, and the third starts at front of the dorsal fin and goes back to the base of the tail. It also has a bright to deep red coloring on the front fins and tail. All together this vibrant, complimentary color combination makes it an extremely striking fish. They are most colorful when they are young however, and do become a bit less brilliant as a larger fish.

This fish will need a good sized tank as an adult because in the aquarium a Clown Loach can grow up to about 6 1/2 to 8 inches (16-20 cm) long. The word "macracanthus" stands for "big spine", and as this name suggests they have a pre orbital spine that is quite large. Being pre orbital means the spine is located in the area under and in front of the eyes. It makes an effective defensive weapon. They also have four barbels in the mouth area, and have been known to make audible clicking sounds.

The Clown Loach likes an aquarium with lots of plants and other areas for retreat. For the most part they are a shy bottom dweller, but unlike many loaches this Tiger Loach is active during the day. Once they are secure in their environment they can even become quite tame. They like the company of their own species and can also be kept with other fish. Clown Loaches are fairly easy to keep, but they are prone to ich.

              Peach Faced Loved Birds
              Peach Faced Loved Birds

Lovebirds are a small type of parrot that are green in the wild but have many color mutations in varieties that are bred as pets. They have a long, hooked beak and a short, blunt tail. Lovebirds get their name from their tendency to form monogamous bonds that can last their entire lifetime. Males and females look alike. While they are affectionate to their mates, they are territorial and aggressive to others they view as intruders, like other birds in the household. Love Birds are small One of the pleasures of lovebirds is that they are easy to breed. For breeding lovebirds, each pair of birds will need 2 nest boxes for sleeping and nesting. These boxes need to be of the same type and size, and placed at the same height on the same wall.

              Breeding Lovebirds

Lovebirds will breed willingly as single pairs and some species of lovebirds can be bred in a colony setting. Especially suited to a colony are the white eye-ring group of lovebirds.

              Breeding Age for Lovebirds

Lovebirds need to be at least 10 months old, though 12 to 13 months is better. Also birds that are 5 to 6 years or older should be retired from breeding. Sexing Lovebirds Some visual characteristics that may aid in determining sex are that the female is heavier bodied than the male and will sit more broadly with legs apart, while the males sit more upright.
A females tail will appear more square while a males will appear more rounded. When observing the nesting behavior, the female will do most of the nest building work. An anal inspection can be done but takes experience in sexing these birds to make a fair determination. Basically there are two bones called the ossa pubes on the ventral side of the pelvis and the female will be spread wider apart than the male.
              Breeding Environment
If you are breeding lovebirds in a colony setting, it is very important to provide many more nest boxes than their are pairs of birds to minimize fighting. The nest boxes should all be the same and mounted at the same height of the enclosure. Also, be diligent in watching for fighting as it can lead to death. A nest box for a lovebird is 8" x 8" x 8" (20 x 20 x 20 cm) or 10" x 6" x 6" (25 x 15 x 15 cm).
              Egg Laying
Baby Olive Fischer Love Bird in Nest
Baby Olive Fischer Love BirdAdd caption
The female will lay about 5 eggs, though the clutch could be as few as 3 eggs or as many as 8 eggs.

              Incubation Time

The incubation period is 22 - 25 days, with 75% to 80% of the eggs hatching. The hen will start to brood after the second egg is hatched. Often the male will join the hen in the nest. The chicks will begin to leave the nest in about 38 - 50 days and will be independent about 2 weeks after leaving the nest.
              image

When attempting to calculate future hatch dates, always count forward from the day that you notice the hen begins to sit on the eggs. Sometimes the hen won't sit until all the eggs of a clutch have been laid, and they all need equal incubation time.

              Hatchling Care and Weaning
Most breeders allow the hen to feed the babies from hatching to the age of two or three weeks. After that, the breeders take the babies out of the nest and place them in a brooder for hand-feeding. Most lovebirds need to be hand-fed until they are between six and eight weeks old when you can begin to wean them onto millet, soft pellets, and fresh fruits and vegetables.

Housing and Caging for African Love Birds

Lovebirds are very active birds. When housing your lovebird, bird cages or an aviary best suited to them must provide a lot of space. Keeping a Lovebird socialized requires a serious commitment to daily interaction. It is highly recommended to keep Lovebirds in pairs. Includes Eye Ring, Fischer’s, Black Masked and Peachface Lovebirds.

                Bird Cages:
Rectangular cages are best because they offer space for a lovebird to fly back and forth as it would naturally do if it lived out in the wild. . A minimum of 32 x 20 x 20 (81 x 50 x 50 cm) per pair of birds is recommended with about four perches, feed and water dishes and an area for a bath. When you use a small cage, you must let your pet out daily to fly around.
Breading Peachy and Turq Love Birds
                Peachy and Turq Love Birds
If you are housing pairs of lovebirds here are a few guidelines: Try to house only one species of lovebird as mixing species can cause serious fights. House either one pair of lovebirds or three pairs, never two pairs or there will be fighting. Each pair needs about 35 cubic feet of space. Lovebirds need a good night's rest of about 10 to 12 hours, so cover the cage at night to block out light.

                Bird Perches:

Provide one or two perches about 3/4' in diameter and dishes hanging from the side for feed, water, and grit. Try to place the perches away from dishes so the food and water dish do not become soiled with bird droppings. Do not use plastic because your bird will chew and break the plastic and it can become hazardous.
Housing and Caging of African Love Birds
Tree branches of a similar size make good perches and will help to wear the claws down naturally. The ideal size range for a lovebird's perch is three-fourths to one and one-half inches. It's best to use several hardwood perches that aren't easily chewed, as well as one cement conditioning perch to keep the nails and beak trimmed.

                Bird Hide / Nest Box:

Lovebirds like special resting places. Nest boxes placed up high, all at the same level and all of the same type work well and help prevent fights.

                Aviary:

A roomy indoor aviary, a bird room, or an outdoor aviary (depending on your area) are all good choices. The aviary needs plenty of light and fresh air. The outdoor aviary needs to have a protected shelter that can be heated and cooled where necessary.
