The cosmic ocean 🌊
This #hubbleclassic image shows a sea of glowing hydrogen gas, along with small amounts of other elements such as oxygen and sulfur.
The "waves" of gas have been sculpted and illuminated by a torrent of ultraviolet radiation from young, massive stars, which are outside the picture to the upper left.
Known as M17 (or the Swan or Omega Nebula), this starforming region resides about 5,500 light-years away in the constellation Sagittarius.
