From Dock to Delicious: Cruising to Peppermint Bay

A Peppermint Bay Cruise from Hobart offers a perfect slice of Tasmanian life—a scenic, relaxing journey filled with delicious food, breathtaking views, and close encounters with nature. Ideal for both locals looking for a day escape and visitors wanting to explore Tasmania’s beauty from the water, this cruise blends luxury with authenticity in a memorable way.

A Culinary Highlight: Tasmanian Flavours on the Plate
One of the most anticipated aspects of the Peppermint Bay Cruise is the gourmet experience. After cruising through the serene waters of the Derwent River and the d’Entrecasteaux Channel, guests arrive at the award-winning Peppermint Bay Hotel in the village of Woodbridge. This is where the culinary journey truly begins.

The hotel’s menu is crafted around seasonal Tasmanian produce, much of it sourced from the venue’s own gardens and local suppliers. Diners are treated to a multi-course lunch that could include fresh seafood, house-made breads, slow-cooked meats, and regional vegetables, all paired with Tasmania’s finest wines, beers, and ciders. Popular dishes like roasted carrots with honey and native pepper or slow-roasted lamb shoulder with mint adjika speak to the island’s diverse and fresh cuisine. The dessert offerings, such as meringue with yogurt cream and strawberries, provide a sweet finale to a sumptuous meal.

Spectacular Scenery: A Visual Feast
The journey to Peppermint Bay is just as enticing as the destination. Departing from Hobart’s Brooke Street Pier, the luxury catamaran sails past historical landmarks, rolling hills, and the striking Alum Cliffs. The route through the d’Entrecasteaux Channel offers panoramic views of pristine waters, distant mountains, and quiet bays—perfect for photography or simply soaking in the beauty.

As you near Peppermint Bay, Bruny Island rises in the distance, creating a postcard-worthy backdrop. The boat itself is designed for maximum comfort and viewing pleasure, with indoor and outdoor decks that allow passengers to enjoy the ever-changing scenery, no matter the weather.

Wildlife Encounters: Tasmania’s Natural Residents
Wildlife lovers will find plenty to be excited about on this cruise. The waters along the route are often visited by playful dolphins, sunbathing seals, and, during certain seasons, migrating whales. Bird enthusiasts can keep an eye out for white-breasted sea eagles and other coastal species.

One unique feature of the cruise is the use of an underwater “Spy Ball” camera at Tinderbox Bay. This spherical camera is dropped into the water to reveal Tasmania’s hidden marine world—kelp forests, crayfish, stingrays, and colorful fish, all visible in real time on screen aboard the vessel. It’s an engaging and educational glimpse into the ecosystems just beneath the surface.

Sydney Harbour Cruises: The Ultimate Waterfront Adventure

Sydney, with its iconic skyline, world-famous landmarks, and vibrant waterfront, is best explored from the water. Sydney Harbour cruises offer a front-row seat to the city's breathtaking beauty, allowing visitors to experience its charm in a unique and unforgettable way. From stunning views to diverse cruising options, here’s why Sydney Harbour cruises are the ultimate way to experience the city.

Breathtaking Views from the Water
Sydney Harbour is one of the most picturesque natural harbours in the world, and a cruise provides uninterrupted views of its most iconic landmarks. Here are some of the best sights you can enjoy from a Sydney Harbour cruise:

1. Sydney Opera House
One of the most recognized architectural marvels in the world, the Sydney Opera House is even more stunning when viewed from the water. A harbour cruise lets you admire its sail-like structures from multiple angles, especially during sunset when the golden hues reflect off its white sails.

2. Sydney Harbour Bridge
Also known as the "Coathanger", the Sydney Harbour Bridge is a masterpiece of engineering. A cruise lets you sail right beneath the bridge, offering a unique perspective of its steel arch towering above. If you're lucky, you might even spot climbers making their way to the summit!

3. Circular Quay and The Rocks
As you glide past Circular Quay, you'll witness the heart of Sydney’s waterfront, buzzing with ferries, restaurants and historic sites. Nearby, The Rocks, one of Sydney’s oldest neighbourhoods, portrays a splendid contrast between modern skyscrapers and colonial-era buildings.

4. Fort Denison and Shark Island
These historic sites sit in the middle of the harbour and offer insight into Sydney’s past. Fort Denison, once a penal site, is a well-preserved colonial fortress, while Shark Island offers a peaceful retreat with picnic areas and panoramic views of the harbour.

5. Darling Harbour and Barangaroo
Some Sydney Harbour cruises also take you past Darling Harbour, a vibrant entertainment precinct and Barangaroo, a redeveloped waterfront district blending nature with urban sophistication. At night, these areas light up beautifully, making an evening cruise all the more spectacular.

The Unique Atmosphere of a Sydney Harbour Cruise
A Sydney Harbour cruise offers more than just sightseeing — it’s an immersive experience. The gentle sway of the boat, the refreshing sea breeze and the soothing sounds of the waves create a relaxing yet thrilling atmosphere. Whether you're enjoying a luxurious sunset dinner cruise, an exciting jet boat ride, or a casual sightseeing tour, the harbour provides a dynamic blend of nature and city life.

At night, the skyline transforms into a dazzling display of lights, making an evening cruise one of the most romantic ways to experience Sydney. During the day, the clear blue waters and vibrant greenery around the harbour create a postcard-perfect setting.

Types of Cruises and Their Unique Features
Sydney Harbour is home to a variety of cruises catering to different interests and budgets. Here are some of the most popular options:

1. Sightseeing Cruises
Perfect for first-time visitors, these cruises offer a guided tour of the harbour’s highlights. Many include informative commentary on Sydney’s history and landmarks. Some offer hop-on-hop-off options, allowing you to explore key locations at your own pace.

2. Lunch and Dinner Cruises
The most popular cruises on the harbour. Indulge in a gourmet meal while enjoying spectacular waterfront views, all from a stylish boat. Sunset and twilight dinner cruises add a romantic touch with city lights shimmering on the water.
Some include live entertainment and music for a lively experience.

3. Luxury Yacht and Private Charters
Ideal for a special occasion or an intimate experience.
Offers personalized service, fine dining, and private decks.
Some yachts even allow overnight stays for an extended harbour experience.

4. Adventure Cruises (Jet boats and Tall Ships)
Jet boat rides provide a thrilling way to explore the harbour with high-speed maneuvers. Tall ship cruises transport you back in time with their classic sailing vessels, offering a historic yet interactive experience. These cruises are a hit among the little ones!

5. Whale Watching and Wildlife Cruises
Seasonal whale watching cruises (May to November) let you see the majestic Humpback Whales migrating along the coast. These cruises are your golden ticket to watching the whales breach, lob-tail and spy-hop, all within metres away from the boat! Wildlife cruises also showcase dolphins, seals, and seabirds in their natural habitat.

From Mumbai To Sydney: Our Vivid Sydney Experience

The first time I heard the four syllables—Vivid Sydney—was back in 2014. An Australian exchange student named Steve had joined our class for a semester. As a proud Sydneysider, he spoke about the Vivid Sydney festival with a kind of awe that made us all curious. What was this festival that lit up his voice with excitement?

Fast forward ten years, our old college squad of four was planning our next international trip—our little tradition of going for an international trip every three years. After Spain and Vietnam, it was finally time for Australia. As we mapped out our route, that 10 yr old memory of Steve’s enthusiastic mention of Vivid Sydney came rushing back. It instantly earned a place on our itinerary.

We narrowed our destinations down to three: Cairns, Sydney, and Hobart—two days in each. Our plan was to begin with the Great Barrier Reef, then experience Vivid Sydney, and wrap up with the Dark MOFO festival in Hobart. After Cairns, we flew to Sydney. And this is how our experience unfolded:

Lunch cruises in Sydney

On every ‘things to do in Sydney' list, Sydney lunch cruises topped the list. So we knew that it was an unmissable experience. And needless to say, it was a bucket-list worthy moment. Our first day in Sydney started with this lunch cruise experience. We booked an elegant catamaran which had spacious outer decks for the perfect harbour view.

An average foreigner’s image or idea of Australia is through the Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge—we understood why! The on-water views of the Sydney skyline and other popular attractions like Luna Park, Fort Denison etc., was definitely astonishing. The views were accompanied by a delicious buffet meal. After the cruise, we had to wait until 6pm for Vivid Sydney. That’s when an idea erupted:

Finding Steve

If it weren’t for Steve, we wouldn’t be in Sydney. So, we badly wanted to find him, but since 2014 wasn’t much of an Instagram era, we had no contacts, which led us to contacting our college, who denied our request due to privacy and security concerns. But desperate times call for desperate measures—so we called one of our dear professors, who, conveniently, is now the Head of Department. He pulled some strings (being attentive in class paid off) and finally got us an email id and a number. We dialed the number with low expectations—and surprise, someone picked up. Turned out it was Steve’s dad’s number. He initially thought that we were some Indian call centre trying to scam him, nonetheless, we managed to convince him and he finally gave Steve’s contact number.

Hearing Steve’s voice after all those years felt surreal. We arranged to meet near Darling Harbour. And there he was—no longer the 19-year-old we remembered from our college days, but a 29-year-old man, married, and a proud father of a two-year-old. He invited us to his home and we caught up on the ten years we’d missed— reminiscing, laughing, and getting a little emotional along the way. Steve was genuinely touched that we had made the effort to find him. Before we left, he promised to take us to Vivid Sydney—and just like that, we scored a free local guide.

Vivid Sydney Experience

No wonder why Steve bragged about the festival back in 2014—it was worth bragging. It was the festival of lights, music, ideas and food. Nearly 10 kms of Sydney lights up with Vivid Light installations—and these are not some average LED decorations, but brilliant artistic and reflective installations. Steve navigated us through the Light Walk—spanning 8.5kms across the city. He literally acted as a guide and gave local facts about the places. The stunning light views were accompanied by live music concerts, talks, and our favourite—delicious food. Steve found us a nice cafe for dinner and we just talked until the day ended. Steve even offered to take us sightseeing the next day, but we refused since he had to take the day off from his work. Soaking up in the magic of Vivid Sydney, we parted that night. And the day after next, we flew to Hobart—for the Dark MOFO festival.

So maybe Vivid Sydney wasn’t the highlight of our trip after all, maybe it was Steve. The lights and the spectacle were just the backdrop. Vivid Sydney might be a beautiful excuse, or perhaps fate itself, that brought us together. In the end, the journey is never really about the place, it’s about the people who make it unforgettable.

My Father’s 60th Birthday Celebration In Sydney

For every child, seeing their parents age is a bittersweet and contemplative moment. The people who raised you, cared for you and loved you, getting old? That’s the image that everyone tries to avoid. But the day came for me as well—my father’s 60th birthday. I really hadn’t thought about this ageing thing, but the 60th birthday hit hard.

I was initially sad, but then I thought—this is something to be actually happy about. My old man succeeded in life, raised two kids, and is a good husband—and this deserves to be celebrated. And unlike many others (no offense), my relationship with my old man was special. He was the one whom I could actually rely on in difficult circumstances; his ears and mind were always open to my silly blabberings. It was with him that I had my first drink, such was our relationship. So, I had to plan a memorable birthday to honour our relation and more importantly, his milestone. So, this is how I planned the birthday celebration: started the day with golfing, followed by a helicopter ride and a dinner cruise in Sydney.

Men’s Day Out Golfing

Golf is commonly stereotyped as an old man’s sport, but my father doesn’t fit in this as he has never played Golf. So, I decided to treat my father to golfing (and also to see if the stereotype is true). But to my surprise, for a first timer, he was pretty good and handy with the equipment. Between the shots, it was silence; but both of us knew that it was a pure father-son moment! Located at Little Bay, the golf course and the driving range offered the scenic views of Sydney, so it made the experience much better. After a good game, we had our lunch from the club and headed to our next destination.

Helicopter Tour

This was by far the most expensive thing I’ve spent my money on after getting a job, but hey, it’s for my father, the man who spent his life savings on me. So, this is the least I could do. Our Heli Tour included a ride to the Blue Mountains; and the base was located near the Sydney CBD. After our safety briefing and photo session outside the chopper, we got inside—and let me tell you, the take off with its loud noise and vibrations were chilling and scary, but after the lift off, the views made up for the eerie starting.

We’ve been living in Sydney for a long time, and the city skyline was not something alien to us, it was part of daily life, but the aerial views of the harbour and skyline changed our perspective of Sydney. We now knew how God felt looking at the skyline from above. And on the way to Blue Mountains, we also got to catch the stunning aerial views of Bondi, Clovelly & Maroubra Beach, and many iconic Sydney attractions. But ‘Blue Mountains’ proved to be something else; we got views of the Three Sisters and other secret spots of the mountain, only visible from air. I saw my dad enjoying it, but still, he didn’t say anything. And after this long ride, we headed home and got ready for the next destination.

Sydney Harbour Dinner Cruise

My dad knew our next stop was the dinner cruise, but he had no idea what was waiting for him. He thought it would be just the two of us boarding the boat. But the moment we stepped inside, he was met with cheers and familiar faces—our entire family, his closest friends, and old colleagues were already on board, waiting to surprise him. I’ve never seen him so stunned. We had booked a luxury glass boat, and the crew aboard went above and beyond to help us plan everything perfectly. The evening unfolded with a four-course meal and bottomless drinks, all set against the glittering lights of the harbour.

And there he was—my dad, now in his 60s, surrounded by his loved ones. A man who spent his life building relationships, raising a strong family, and securing a future for his children. Then came the moment for his speech. The man who had been quietly holding it all in all day finally opened up. He let go of his usual tough demeanor and became completely vulnerable. His words were full of gratitude, love and reflection. He thanked me for organising the evening, and as he spoke, I saw tears well up in my mom’s eyes.
It might sound simple, but in that moment, his words were everything. They were words of validation, affection and pride. And I didn’t realise how much I needed to hear them until I did.

The best gift that I could ask for was right in front of me—my father. He taught me to prepare for the tough world; and perhaps that is the meaning of being a father—“to teach your child to live without you!” And now I know how to raise my kids properly. Thank you dad for everything and happy 60th birthday!
