A galactic group project!
This stunning image of the galaxy NGC 3627 features information from three space-based telescopes! Hubble's visible-light data is seen in red, green, and blue. The Chandra X-ray Observatory contributed X-ray data (purple) and NASA's James Webb Space Telescope brought the infrared (also seen in red, green, and blue).
NGC 3627 resides about 36 million light-years away from Earth. It's classified as a barred spiral galaxy due to the rectangular shape of its central region.
Chandra's X-ray vision reveals evidence for a supermassive black hole in the galaxy's center, in addition to other dense objects like neutron stars: ultra dense cores of stars formed when massive stars run out of fuel and collapse.
Tomorrow marks 25 years of the Chandra mission! Its valuable X-ray information has uncovered our universe's most exotic environments and helps scientists understand the structure and evolution of the cosmos.
Alongside observatories like Webb and Hubble, Chandra's X-ray vision grants us a broader view of space, across the electromagnetic spectrum.
