Top 10 Romantic Characters: Female

In Hindi films, we have epitomised romance and romantic heroines. Think of Hindi films minus the heroines clad in chiffon saris and Lata Mangeshkar’s melodious voice. It wouldn’t be the same, would it be? Would you have returned home bedazzled by the charm of the heroine and buy the latest poster to stick it on your walls? Every Indian man has wanted, at some point of time or the other in his life, to marry an actress – and that my friend could be ascribed only to the romantic films. In the second part of the twin post, we look at the top 10 female romantic character portrayals in Hindi cinema.

Please note, I am not talking about the actors here, this post is only about the characters. And obviously, it’s a very personal list – would love to see your choices in the comments section. Till then, here is my list.

10. SUMAN – MAINE PYAR KIYA

10

She comes as a guest but you hope she never leaves. Suman is coy, naive yet righteous. She can give up anything for the sake of her father’s pride but she can revolt against her father when the latter wrongs her lover. Her million dollar smile is good enough to placate any anguished mind. And when she wears the cap with ‘Friend’ written on it, you just want to have a friend like her.

09. MADHU – DIL

She is feisty, she is challenging but when it comes to her love, she can sacrifice her love for the sake of love. She will fight with you in front of the world, defeat you in dance in front of everyone but when she wants to confess her love, she will kiss you amidst everyone as well. Madhu is so powerful a character that her hero can pale in comparison.

08. NEHA (Miss Chamko) – CHASHME BUDDOOR

8

Whoever has seen the 1981 starrer “Chashme Buddoor” has been in love with Neha Rajan urf Miss Chamko at least for sometime. She was the sweet girl next door, doe-eyed beauty – the kind of girl we’d love to bring home to meet Mom. Yet, what’s best about her is that she is not naive, she is a Delhi-ite. She likes the guy to whom she sells the washing powder and drops a hint about her timings and routines. Here’s a tutty-fruity to Ms Chamko.

07. DOLLY – OMKARA

7

She is disarmingly beautiful and attractive. She is educated, charming yet she gives her heart to the gangster and her life for him (probably ‘to him’) too. Yet, what makes Dolly the most appealing is her simplicity and vulnerability. She tries to make amends in her lover’s groups, without realising how she is falling to prey to an entire conspiracy. Yet, she bears the insults and wounds without complaint – masking it with her love.

06. AAROHI – AASHIQUI 2

6

In a way, Aarohi is too good to be true. She is pretty, she is talented and she is dedicated to the core. Yes, she is supported by the guy to reach the peak of fame that she achieves, but the way she is willing to sacrifice every ounce of that fame and happiness for him is heart-rending. At the end of the story, when she stands alone on the beach and watches the other couple share an intimate moment, our hearts just go out for her saying, ‘You chose the wrong man, girl!’

05. SAPNA – EK DUJE KE LIYE & RASHMI – QAYAMAT SE QAYAMAT TAK

5a 5b

Pretty much like their male counterparts, Sapna and Rashmi are derived from the most popular romantic-tragedy in the world – Romeo & Juliet. The only difference is that Sapna is ferocious, and Rashmi is docile. Sapna’s strength almost overshadows her hero’s while Rashmi’s warmth is infectiously sweet. And, when they meet their tragic ends, your heart just melts for both of them.

04. CHANDNI – CHANDNI

4

Think of a woman lying on the bed with a blue chiffon sari draped over her lean frame. Chances are you thought of Chandni. She is the epitome of beauty – the kind of girl you would want to steal glances of. She takes her time to commit to love but when she does, Chandni can go to any length to be with her man. Yet, when she is pushed away, Chandni finds a life of her own. However, when she meets the man she loves, she cannot resist giving up everything to be with him.

03. NINA – CHEENI KUM

3

Possibly the wittiest and most humorous portrayal of romantic heroine in Hindi cinema ever, Nina falls in love with a man older than her father, yet she doesn’t feel intimidated at any point of time. Her tongue-in-cheek statements yet blatant honesty are a perfect match for her lover’s cynicism. At 34, Nina might be beyond fancy for the young movie-goers, but she is the perfect combo of beauty and brains.

02. ZAARA – VEER ZAARA

2

Zaara is born and brought up in a conservative Pakistani family, and she is even betrothed to a man when she comes across an Indian air-force officer. She warms up to him but feels her affection only after returning to home, perhaps when she realises that the officer was someone who could value her more than any other man. And so, when she hears the news of that officer’s death, Zaara decides to sacrifice everything to serve that man’s family, village and unfulfilled dream.

01. NANDINI – HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM

1

Nandini hated the guest who overtook her favourite room, and played every trick to embarrass that man. However, her heart gradually went out to the same guest and she was irrevocably in love with him. She wants to fight her destiny to get back with that man even at the cost of her marriage. However, after the dramatic journey she undertakes with her husband, Nandini realises that she might have learnt the idea of love from her lover but the depth of it could be imbibed from her husband. Hence, at the end, she determines the true of meaning of Love and makes the correct choice.

So, here’s my list. Let me know your comments :)
