Treasuring the Trials - Proverbs 17:3

Treasuring the Trials - Proverbs 17:3

It’s only through heating and melting that gold and silver are purified; that’s why the Bible often likens God’s work in our hearts to purifying gold or silver: “Fire tests the purity of silver and gold, but the LORD tests the heart” Proverbs 17:3 (NLT).

So perhaps we need to rethink the fires in our lives. We need to recognize the difficult times for what they area refining of our characters.

You’ve probably heard that you’ll never really know what you’ll do in a situation until you’re in that situation. Knowing this, isn’t it possible that God uses the trials in our lives to (1) be a mirror that shows us our character, good or bad—tough situations often give us the opportunity to see who we really are (if we’re brave enough to face the mirror) and (2) to bring us to a place where we finally recognize our need for Him. (Some of us must be brought to the darkest valley before we can recognize our desperate need for a Savior.)

So the next time you feel like your feet are being held to the fire, instead of complaining, try praising your loving heavenly Father for burning off the impurities in your life.
