I come from a Land called Tamil Nadu

I come from a land
----------------------------

I come from a land where a woman poet mediated war between kings,
walking the lands unarmed.
Where she held all her wisdom the size of the sand in her hand,
and proclaimed that the unlearned was the size of the world.

I come from a land that sailed the seas,
where people claimed every town as their own wherever in the world,
and everyone was kin,
I come from a land where its people knew no inhibitions or boundaries,
and the faraway lands spoke their tongue.

I come from a land where a king rode by
and seeing a trailing jasmine creeper,
gifted it his chariot for support and walked home.
I come from a land where war poetry fused with love poetry,
and kings were humbled by temples they built that reached the skies,
and poets and arts transcended war and victory and kings bowed to them.

I come from a land where a temple was built for empty space,
and the secret of ‘no deity’ offered esoteric humour at its highest.
I come from a land where poetry fused into the terrain of the land,
and speaks of its flora and fauna and each land speaks its longing.

I come from a land where wisdom is held in 2 lines,
a mere seven-word Haiku that covers the world, composed by a weaver.

I come from a land where temples have a thousand pillars,
and towers that reach the sky,
where kings expanded their empire to bring rivers home.

I come from a land where a woman fought for justice,
and burnt an entire town down through the power of her anger,
where the scepter was held as the ultimate measure of justice,
and kings died in shame for failing its people.

I come from a land,
where war wounds were earned on the chest fighting head on,
and to turn one’s back was cowardice.

I come from a land that praised its farmers, loved its cattle,
praised the grain and played with the sun.
I come from a land where a woman sang her love poetry for the gods,
and male gods danced the song of creation.

I come from a land where a poet dreamed of women
walking alone in the dead of the night safe.

Where are the voices of my land,
why are they getting feebler and feebler?
Where are the voices of my land,
that the earth speaks of them no more?
Where are the voices of my land,
from across the seas and across the mountains?

I come from a land, that is losing its stories.
I come from a land that is forgetting its words.
I come from a land that built its uniqueness in its very name,
having a inimitable syllable in the middle of its name,
A name unlike any other. A land unlike any other.
What do you know of my land?
What do you know of its stories?
What do you know that you ask me to forget them all?

Let me whisper the story of my land again unto your ears.
A land called Tamil Nadu.

Long, long ago, there was a land.
A land where a woman poet mediated war between kings,
walking the lands unarmed.
Where she held all her wisdom the size of the sand in her hand,
and proclaimed that the unlearned was the size of the world.
I come from a land that sailed the seas,
where people claimed every town as their own wherever in the world,
and everyone was kin…
