Popular Male Jodis of Indian Cinema: Part 1

One of the most oft explored themes in Indian cinema is that of Male bonding. Since time immemorial, the male bonding theme was explored in various ways . i.e. through a love triangle ( 2 guys falling for the same girl), lost and found formula, two brothers or friends on the opposite sides of the law and other such oft explored themes. These themes more than often resulted in some great films being made which pitted popular male actors in multistarrers against each other in various permutations and combinations.

The first part of the 2/3 part series looks at the popular male jodis of Hindi Cinema.

Amitabh Bachchan – Dharamendra  : Undoubtedly this remains one of the most memorable on screen casting. The number of films they did together is very less. But this Jodi will always be remembered as perhaps the most celebrated duo of best friends as Jai and Veeru in the most celebrated film of Indian Cinema and the all time blockbuster – Sholay. Besides they also starred in Hrishikesh Mujkherjee’s classic comedy – Chupke Chupke and Vijay Anand’s Ram Balram . They last re-united for Hum Kaun Hai, which also starred Dimple Kapadia , Moushmi Chatterjee – a very forgettable film and a rehash of the Nicole Kidman starrer- The  Others.

Amitabh  Bachchan – Shashi Kapoor :  Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor were a part of several iconic films such as Deewaar,Shaan,  Kabhie Kabhie, Kaala Patthar, Namak Halal amongst others.   Amitabh Bachchan also starred in Ajooba – the only film to be directed by Shashi Kapoor . They had last appeared together in Akayla which also happened to be the last film of Amitabh Bachchan which was directed by Ramesh Sippy.

Amitabh Bachchan – Vinod Khanna  : During the 701’s i.e when Bachchan  was reigning supreme , there was perhaps only one leading man who had almost come close to dethroning  Big B from his box office supremacy. That man is none other than Vinod Khanna.  They however were a part of many memorable multistarrer hits such as Amar Akbar Anthony, Parvarish, Khoon Pasina, Hera Pheri, Mukaddar Ka Sikandar amongst others. Many members of the audience were of the opinion that Khanna stole the thunder from Bachchan whenever they appeared together on the screen. It is also believed had Vinod Khanna not left films during his peak period in 70’s( to be on a spiritual discourse with Osho Rajneesh) he would easily have overtaken Amitabh Bachchan as the numero uno star.

Anil Kapoor – Jackie Shroff :  Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff first appeared in the Raj N Sippy directed Andar Bahar which was inspired by the film 48 Hours starring Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte . Thereafter Kapoor and Shroff have starred together in a lot of memorable films (Ram Lakhan , Parinda, 1942 A Love Story) and a couple of forgettable films ( Kabhi Na Kabhi, Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja, Trimurti) . The interesting thing to be observed here is that in all these films Anil Kapoor got the more meatier roles, barring Parinda where Jackie Shroff outshone Anil Kapoor completely.

Saif and Akki

Akshay Kumar – Saif Ali Khan : Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan starred together in Yeh Dillagi and Main Khiladi Tu Anari both of which struck gold at the box office.   Buoyed by the success of these films, they went to star in films such as Keemat, Tu Chor Main Sipahi and Aarzoo all of which turned out to be box office turkeys.  After a long time they re-united in the critically and commercially panned Tashan.

Akshay Kumar  – Suniel Shetty : Right from the beginning of their careers , Akshay Kumar and Suniel Shetty have starred together in memorable films such as Mohra, Waqt Hamara Hai and Hera Pheri.  The duo also had several ego clashes after Hera Pheri wherein Shetty had accused Kumar of chopping his role. The issue was soon sorted out thereafter and they went on to star together in several films . They last starred together in the Anees Bazmee directed film Thank You.

Govinda- Sanjay Dutt: Govinda and Sanjay Dutt first starred together in the flop film Taaqatwar which also marked the directorial debut of David Dhawan .  In the same year they also starred in Do Qaidi , another box office dud.  In between they also starred in the blockbuster hit Jeete Hain Shaan Se (with Mithun Chakraborty) and Andolan which was an average grosser.  Years later, they reunited with Dhawan for Haseena Maan Jaayegi which not only was successful but also ranks amongst the better films of David Dhawan. Dhawan directed Govinda and Sanjay Dutt again in Jodi No. 1 and the rather forgettable Ek aur Ek Gyarah.

Dharamendra – Mithun Chakraborty  : During the 80’s and 90’s Dharmendra and Mithun starred together in many movies beginning with the Raj N Sippy directed Baazi. Ghulami directed by J.P Dutta remains undoubtedly their most memorable film together. Besides this, they starred in various films such as Jagir, Humse Naa Takrana, Karishma Kudrat Ka amongst others. Even during the phase of Mithun’s Ooty films – they starred together in grindhouse classics such as Loha and Sultaan :)

Kadar Khan with Shakti KapoorKadar Khan – Shakti Kapoor : The duo of Kadar Khan and Shakti Kapoor remains perhaps the only and most successful duo of character artistes. Right from the 80’s they have been a part of various films which mainly included the Madras Potboilers such as  Himmatwala, Mawaali, Maqsad, Geraftaar, Muddat Watan Ke Rakhwale amongst many other films. Such was their popularity and their chemistry, that they were cast together in lead roles in the 1990 comedy film Baap Numbari Beta Dus Numbari which was directed by Yunus Sajawal. Though the film starred Jackie Shroff and Aditya Panscholi as lead heroes, the film mainly focussed on the antics of the notorious father and son duo of Kader Khan and Shakti Kapoor

Dharamendra -  Shatrughan Sinha :

ZalzalaDharmendra and Shatrughan Sinha  actually have been a fairly successful combination and have worked on multiple films from the early one’s like Black Mail and Jheel Ke Us Paar in 1973 to later one’s like Taaqat (1995) and Zulm-O-Sitam (1998). While Shatrughan was the baddie in Black Mail, he quickly graduated to playing the parallel lead in various films with Dharmendra. Some of the more memorable films they worked together on include Dillagi (1978), Insaniyat Ke Dushman (1987), Loha (1987), Aag Hi Aag (1987) and Zalzala (1988).

Dharam VeerDharamendra  - Jeetendra
:  They first starred together in the Manmohan Desai directed blockbuster Dharam Veer. Thereafter Dharamendra and Jeetendra starred together in a number of flicks such as Samraat , Jaan Hatheli Pe, Sone Pe Suhaaga amongst others.

Feroz-VinodFeroz Khan – Vinod Khanna : Though they appeared only in two films together , Feroz Khan and Vinod Khanna remain one of the most popular actor duos of Hindi cinema.  The credit mainly for this goes to Feroz Khan’s stylishly directed Qurbani. They later reunited for Dayavan – which was a remake of the Kamal Hassan starrer Nayagan directed by Mani Ratnam . Feroz Khan remains one of the very few actor- directors who gave Khanna meatier roles in both the films, compared to his own role. Khanna was also present with Feroz Khan during his last days and his subsequent demise.

Ashok Kumar with PranAshok Kumar and Pran : Friends in real life, Ashok Kumar and Pran went on to act in 27 films together starting from Afsana in 1951. Probably the most memorable film featuring this Jodi must be Victoria No.203 where their combination as Raja and Rana became very popular. To cash in on the success of this film, they starred in another film titled Raja and Rana which was a disaster to say the least.

Ganga Ki KasamMithun Chakraborty – Jackie Shroff : Before the Ootywood phase of Mithunda begin, He and Jackie starred together only in one film i.e. Shatranj. However, during Mithun’s Ooty phase , Jackie teamed up with him for several flicks such as Yamraaj, Shapath, Aag Hi Aag amongst others. They were last cast together in the Salman Khan starrer Veer as protagonist and antagonist respectively.

AngaarJackie Shroff– Nana Patekar : Starting with Parinda, Jackie Shroff and Nana Patekar co-starred in films such as Yugpurush, Agnisakshi, the much delayed Gang and Angaar – which remains one of the best films of Jackie Shroff and Nana Patekar to date.

It would be great to hear from you all about which is your favorite jodi among all these (and those whom I might have missed out on).
